Prof. Sherif Kandil has a long career commitment in education, policy reforms and planning. He was involved in initiating and managing different academic departments that introduced new disciplines to the Arab Region. He is an active member in several national and international networks that aim at education advancement and development.
Prof. Kandil founded and headed the Materials Science Department at Alexandria University (1983-93), which was a new discipline at the Egyptian Universities. He was appointed as the Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research at Alexandria University (1996-2002).
While working as the Dean of the college of graduate studies at the Arabian Gulf University (2002-5), he formulated a proposal for introducing two academic programs on “Distance Teaching and Training”, and “Environmental Management”.
Prof. Kandil has a strong belief in science for development. He co-established and headed the Arab Society for Materials Science (a scientific NGO that promoted, communicated and conducted a series of training courses, symposia and conferences that deal with the various applications of materials. He also founded and co-chaired the series of conferences entitled “the Arab International Conference for Materials Science” (1 – 17). He directed the Post Experience Program in Alexandria University that offered many short courses to the Egyptian Industry and the community at large.
Prof. Kandil joined many study tours, most significantly the program entitled “Academia and the Corporate World” organized by USIS. During this visit to the USA he was able to see many nontraditional educational approaches. Also he joined the program organized by the British Council, UK to visit the science and technology incubation centers and science parks. This was adopted in the program initiated by Alexandria University entitled “University Industry Interaction for Development”. These experiences were reflected in his book “University and Industry: the Case of Alexandria; El Delta Press, Alexandria, 1993( in Arabic)”
Prof. Kandil published more than 120 Scientific articles. He authored, edited and translated more than 15 books that deal with a wide range of scientific and cultural topics. He traveled extensively around the world and delivered many keynote speeches in various international conferences and symposia.
Prof. Kandil was awarded the Alexandria University Recognition Award (2002), and the Egyptian State Recognition Award (2017).
